Listed below are the plants (bamboo and bamboo like grasses) currently in our collection
and notes on their growth at our site in Central Florida:

Arundinaria gigantea

6/03 - Received specimen of "native bamboo' - later identified as japonica.  4/06 Dug three bare root culms.  Potted three, one wilted.  5/06 wilted specimen put out new growth.

Arundo donax variegated   

Not a bamboo but an interesting grass.  Invasive, especially when near water source.  6/03 planted collected rhyzomes.  6/05 dug out of collection and movedto wetland.  Several stems 3/4" dia and 10' tall.

Bambusa chungii

3/07 new plant arrived. 8/07 split.

Bambusa chungii barbelatta

7/06 2-gal pot putting up new culm. 8/06 split planted in demo garden.


Bambusa eutuldoides viridivittata

10/03 Purchased as 'textilis vitatta' single stem 2-gal.  6/04 split pot and planted one plant.  6/05 new shoots 3/4".  6/06 new shoots 1-1/4" growing well in spite of drought.  Very interesting stems. Does well, but slower than pervariablis.

Bambusa gibba

6/06 2-gal pot. 8/06 split planted in demo garden 

Bambusa malingensis

6/03 single stem 1-gal pot.  6/04 divided and planted.  6/05 new shoots 3/4".   6/06 new shoots 1+" strong growth. Grows well. Needs some time to get established.

Bambusa multiplex

3/03 collected two stems cut to 5' and planted.  Strong growth first year.  6/06 Plants 25' tall 6' dia.  Stems 3/4' strong growth. Best choice for large (20+' ) hedge, grows quickly.

Bambusa multiplex 'Alphonse Karr'

4/03 2-gal pot.  10/03 divided and planted. 6/05 Healthy growth stems 5/8". 6/06 Very strong growth many stem 3/4".  Pinkish color

on new shoots.  Prominent stripes.  Very interesting plant.  Grows very well.

Bambusa multiplex 'Fernleaf'

5/03 2-gal pot divided, planted 1.  Strong growth. 6/06 plant 8' tall 6' dia.  Excellent for 6-8' hedge.

Bambusa multiplex 'Golden Goddess'

4/06 collected 2 single stems - one year culms sans leaves.  7/06 strong growth on both plants. 8/06 planted in demo garden 

Bambusa multiplex 'Silver Stripe'

7/04 collected from hedge in Sumter County.  4/05 Trying to flower, few new leaves. 6/05 matched to flowering plant at USDA Byron.  4/06 Trying to flower no viable seeds.  7/06 moved and trimmed old canes.  6/07 trying to flower again cut off flowers.  9/07 Puttting up new culms without flowers.

Bambusa multiplex 'Silver Stripe'

01/04 purchased at Kanapaha for division and planting.  Placed in partial shade for new growth.  5/04 not doing well planted without dividing in full sun (10+hours no shade). 5/05 responding well new culms 1/2-3/4".  07/06 Excellent growth many new culms 3/4".  Cut new from sides of clump.

02/06 2-gal pot.  04/06 Divided  6/06 planted in demo garden

Bambusa oldhamii

10/02 2-gal pot.  5/03 divided and planted. 8/05 new culms 3" dia.  5/06 planted second specimen in demo garden. 8/06 several new culms in demo garden 1+"   New culms in yard 3+".  Grows very well in Central Florida

Bambusa pervariabilis viridistriatus

10/03 2-gal pot.  6/04 divided into 3 and planted one.  7/05 Excellent growth new culms 1+". 7/06 many new culms most 1-1/4 to 1-1/2".  One of the best growing species for Central Florida. Very showy stems. Needs some trimming of low branches

Bambusa sp 'Richard Waldron'

7/06 2-gal pot. 9/06 split plants.  6/07 survived freeze in Feb fully leafed out.

Bambusa textilis 'Kanapaha'

10/03 2-gal pot.  6/04 Divided and planted in circle.  10/04 Raised plant 1 foot - soil damp due to irrigation.  8/05 good growth this year several new culms 5/8-3/4".  10/05 used Roundup on adjacent nutsedge.  Plant dropped most leaves and branches on new culms dying.  7/06 some recovery but still just barely alive. Planted additional from pots in demo garden.  8/06 new culms in garden.  10/07  Garden putting many new shoots.  Replaced Circle specimen with Wong Chuk from Byron.

Bambusa textilis 'Wong Chuck'

04/06 collected culm from stock.  Wilted.  05/06 new branch from base of culm.  7/07 new culms in pot.

Bambusa textilis gracilis

8/04 Planted in demo garden.  8/05 Several new culms 1/2".  8/06 several new culms looks good.  9/07 new culms on specimen at potting bench and yard.

Bambusa tuldoides

6/06 2-gal pot moved to 3-gal.  8/06 split planted in demo garden 9/07 new stems 1+".

Bambusa ventricosa

6/03 1-gal pot. 10/03 divided.  8/04 planted in 125-gal pot for patio and planted one in ground. Both plants developed "Buddha Belly" 4/06 plant in pot has new culms 3/4" x 12'.  Potted plant outgrew pot, moved to location in ground. 6/06 new culms 1".  Strong growing plant with interesting stems when grow in pot.

Bambusa ventricosa 'Clone X'

6/03 1-gal pot single 1/4' culm. 8/03 divided.  10/03 planted single 1/2" stem in ground.  10/04 multiple culms 3/4" dia. Removed lower branches, 10/05 multiple stems 1-1/2" dia 25' tall.  07/06 multiple culms 2" some newest at 2-1/2".  Most vigorous growth of any of our bamboos.  Excellent choice for a large bamboo.                                                                                                                  

Bambusa ventricosa 'Kimmei'

4/03 2-gal pot divided.  8/03 planted.  4/04 several new culms all 'Buddy Belly'. 10/04 trimmed lower branches. 10/05 new culms 3/4" trimmed lower branches.  06/06 trimmed lower branches, new culms 1"- not 'Budda Belly' 9/07 trimmed low branches again.

Bambusa vulgaris vittata

7/03 2-gal pot.  4/04 125-gal pot. 10/04 moved to greenhouse. 4/05 planted. 2/06 frost damage at 23 deg F - killed to ground. 4/06 new branches from bottom of culms.  6/06 new culm 1-1/2".  07 Froze to ground in Feb.  New culms in Aug.

Bambusa vulgaris 'Wamin'

7/03 2-gal POT. 4/04 125-gal pot. 10/04 moved to greenhouse. 4/05 under oak  shade. 2/06 laid on side under oak - light frost damage at 23 deg F.  8/06 new culm in pot.

Dendrocalamus brandisii

3/03 bare root planted. 6/06 new culms 1+" , 20'.  2/04 froze to ground at 27 deg F. 6/04 new culms from rhyzomes 3/4". 2/05 froze to ground at 26 deg F. 5/05 new culms 1/2" moved to Orlando.  2/06 light frost damage at 32 deg F.  6/06 new culm in Orlando.

Dendrocalamus hamiltonii

4/05 planted as test for survival.  2/06 minor frost damage.  6/06 new culm 1+".  2/17/07 froze to ground with 18 deg night,  3/07 ptting out new branches on base of old culms.  Cut off tops of culms.  9/07 Putting out two new culms

Dendrocalamus minor 'Amoenus'

6/06 2-gal pot. 8/06 re-potted 2/17/07 froze to ground in pots one putting out new leaf.  8/07 spit survivor planted in demo garden.

Hibanobambusa tranquillans 'Shiroshima'

6/05 2-gal pot.  10/05 planted in ground in shade.  6/06 continued leaf growth only small culms. 7/07 continued leaf growth, very showy.

Indocalamus tessellatus

2-gal pot divided. One planted full sun. 4/06 new culms 1' tall. Added irrigation.

Muhlenbergia dumosa

7/05 not bamboo but fine bamboo like foliage.  10/05 1 in greenhouse 1 outside.  4/06 greenhouse plant flowering outside plant frost damage.  6/06 both plants new growth, outside started growth first.

Otatea acuminata aztecorum

10/03 2-gal pot divided.  4/04 plants not doing well keep in partial shade.  4/05 very little growth, move to more sun. 4/06 move to full sun.  6/06 new culms and leaf growth.  2/17/07 lost leaves to frost.  4/07 putting out new leaves.  7/07 split and planted in 25 gal pots

Otatea glauca

6/06 2-gal pot. 2/07 loss all leaves to freeze. 6/07 new leaves growing well. Split and planted in demo garden

Phyllostachys aurea

4/03 2-gal pot divided planted.  4/04 new culms.  4/05 new culms spreading to 8 dia.  4/06 new culms to 10' height spreading to 12' dia.  3/07 new culms larger, spreading to 20' dia.

Phyllostachys aurea 'Koi'

2/05 rhyzome cutting.  3/06 split into 2 pots

Phyllostachys aureosulcata

1/04 3-gal pot.  4/04 planted in field.  4/05 several new culms 2-3' from base. Strong growth of small culms.

Phyllostachys angusta

2/06 2-gal pot.  3/07 split

Phyllostachys bambusoides 'Castillon'

4/05 2-gal pot planted in demo garden no irrigation- very wet spring.  08/05 died (August drought).  4/06 collected bare root rhyzome and 1/2" dia stem.  6/06 plant put out one new 1/2" dia stem. Planted in demo garden with bubble irrigation.  6/07 whip surfaced near plant.  Divided plant in pots

Phyllostachys bambusoides 'Crookstem'

1/04 3-gal bare root.  4/04 planted in field.  4/05 some new culms.  4/06 few additional culms

Phyllostachys bissetii

6/05 collected bare root 1/2" stem.  6/07 planted in field, no irrigation.

Phyllostachys dulcis

1/04 bare root. plant 3/4" stem.  4/04 planted in field. 4/05 several new culms 2-3' from base.  4/06 more new culm now spread to 12' dia grove.  New culms 1/2" x 6'.  Strong runner, grows throughout the summer.  Needs lots of nitrogen fertilizer for good color.

Phyllostachys edulis

4/03 3-gal pot. 7/03 divided and planted one in field one in pot.  4/05 pot not progressing moved to field.  New culms on first plant 1/2" x 4'.  4/06 more new culms still 1/2".  7/06 moved one plant to shade.  4/07 new culms still 1/2".

Phyllostachys nigra

02/03 two gal pot divided.  Planted in shade and sun.  Needs consistent water.  4/04 planted in sun with irrigation.  07/06 sun location wilts in afternoon sun recovers in evening.  5/07 sun location putting up 10' culms.

Phyllostachys nigra 'Daikokuchiku'

02/05 rhyzome cutting.  6/07 split into 4 plants, planted one in pasture under irrigation.

Phyllostachys nigra 'Henon'

01/04 1" dia bare root plant.  05/04 Planted.  05/05 Strong new culms 1/2-3/4" two to four feet from base plant.  05/06 several more new culms.  Preferred wet spring of '05.  5/07 strong new culms, spreading into ROW.

Phyllostachys nidularia

02/05 rhyzome cutting potted.

Phyllostachys rubromarginata

2/04 2-gal pot. 07/06 planted in field

Phyllostachys viridis 'Robert Young'

4/06 collected and potted. 5/07 new culm, planted in semi shade.

Phyllostachys vivax

04/03 1-gal pot. 05/04 divided one planted in field. 04/05 new culm in field.  04/06 Strong new culm 3/4" dia

Phyllostachys vivax aureocaulis

6/05 1-gal pot planted no significant growth.  07/06 no new culms positive new growth at tip of branches. 6/07 1 new 3' culm.

Pseduosasa japonica

2/03 2-gal pot divided. One planted in heavy oak shade one in full sun.  07/06 full sun plants continue to grow now spreading further from original plant.  Shade plants running to make open forest. 

Pleioblastus argenteostriatus

07/01 1-gal pot.  10/01 Divided.  4/03 one planted full sun one planted shade.  05/05 full sun plant died.  Shade plants spreading and escaping from pots growing in shade.  Makes good ground cover in shaded locations.

Qiongzhuea tumidissinoda

06/05 bare root plant - planted in oak shade.  11/05 oak trimmed.  07/06 plant growing better this season (4-6 hours direct sun)

7/04 2-gal pot.  04/06 irrigation failure, plants leaf edges drought damage.  Planted

02/06 2-gal pot divided.

Thyrostachys siamensis

5/06 3-gal pot. 7/06 first new culms - very tightly clumped. 2/07 froze to ground.  3/07one1 new culm.  6/07 new culm 5/8" dia
